We've Been doing THAT for Quite Some Time Now

Ever strike you as funny that when referring to the right to vote, the definitive word is suffrage?

Closely resembles the word suffer doesn't it.....

Million Mentor March

For the last few weeks I've been listening to the Michael Baisden show on our local radio station. His current drive is finding mentors for young children and I am totally on board with it. They received a call today that seemed to irk everyone in the studio as well as listeners, myself included. A woman called in with the nerve to say that a white man could not raise a black child or visa versa due to their lack of knowledge in the other races history.

Being of mixed race (black, white and native american) I can tell you that yes, there is a lot of history out there, and some may know more than others. But the real counterpoint is that when someone is calling out for mentors, they're not asking for parents. There is a difference between raising a child and mentoring a child. Asking someone to mentor a child is asking for them to assist in the upbringing of the child by trying to instill their morals and values into that child. Asking someone to raise a child is asking them to parent the child, to be with them 24/7, and among other things, to make the decisions for that child.

Why not allow someone who is willing to aid in the child's upbringing (in a good way) do so? If a parent is not willing to be there as a role model why not let some one else step in? Someone who is willing and emotionally driven to make a difference. Despite the color of a persons skin, their heart still beats the same. If there is someone out there willing to love and teach a child even if only for a few hours a week, why hold the child back from that. At the very least they'd learn what it's like to care for another person, to want the best for someone else. They would learn the meaning of selflessness.

Sorry if this sounded like a big ramble. In between coming home, cooking dinner and typing this I may have strayed a little from the ideal "easy read." All in all what I'm trying to say is this: No matter the race, if they are willing care, give them a chance to.

ATM Robberies....

http://www.orlandosentinel.com/news/local/breakingnews/os-atm-crime-20100217,0,6760738,full.story

So this was an interesting article. The rate of ATM Robberies is increasing and there is really nothing being done to stop, slow down or deter the crimes. The guy in the article had a pretty good idea on implementing a police warning by entering a pin number backwards when being robbed at the machine. This would allow the police to be notified of the attack while still allowing the transaction to go through so you there is less chance of you being killed and more chance of the suspect being caught. But you're still giving away your money!

My suggestion?
What happened to all those phone booths? We should turn those into bullet proof ATM units. Think of it this way, you enter the ATM Booth and close the door, which has a lock, you now feel secure in making your transaction without looking over your shoulder. Not only that, but the glass encasing you, and said ATM, is completely bulletproof. Meaning that any potential robber with a gun looking to kill you for your money has minimal chance of doing so. They can't shoot at you cause the glass is bullet proof, and they sure as hell can't blow it up cause that defeats the purpose doesn't it.

If in fact the booth was shot at or damaged in any way, it would signal an internal alarm sending the nearest police unit to come check out the problem. Also, if you were in said bulletproof booth and someone was attempting to rob you once you made your exit, you would be able to use your cell phone, provided that you have one, to call the police while you were safely locked inside your 'glass case of emotion.'

Not that this is an answer to all the worlds problems, or by putting it in effect makes the world a safer place, but it's an idea. A sensible idea in my opinion. Then again, it is my opinion.

I love my valentine THIS much

So this Valentine's day had to be the sweetest yet. It started out with me having to guess what I was getting. Well not really having to, as I wanted to cause I like to, it's what I do. Anyway I guessed it and it's awesome. Last December we went to Art Basel in Miami and there was ONE peice that I drooled over for hours, days and even months later (yes, still drooling). But there is no way I was going to pay $20K for it. I figured that it would have to stay a fond memory of fine art. That is until I guessed what my Vday gift was! No, not the actual painting, but a print is just as special and much less costly!

So after weeks and weeks of asking what he wanted for Vday I was getting the usual "nothing" response leading me to have to use my brain. Well I thought I was doomed until what felt like the last minute when I figured out the perfect gift. So in 24 hours I built this:

Yes, I BUILT IT.

Here's to being crafty and in love!

Office Politics

I was recently published again in the weekly! But before I reveal my little snip it, let me fill you in on my reason for writing it.

After being Laid off for 5 months and then finding a new job (and only loosing a dollar I might add), I am still quite bitter about being let go from a job that I loved. Well hold on, I take that back. I really liked the job I did. The person I worked with caused heavy stress, but it balanced out when I got free coffees, or lunches. True I did take some of that stress home and it wasn't very healthy, but the actual job was a good fit for me and after two years, I was learning how to not let the stress affect me so much.

I decided last March to get my hair cut, which just so happened to be the same time the Executive Assistant decided to do the same thing. In the beginning we were very excited for each other. I found the curl whisperer in St. Pete and told her it would take three weeks to get an appointment, but I was doing it and she should too. Well she didn't. She went the week before me to some fluke in town. Needless to say her haircut came out horribe, making her head look like a mushroom top. We both cut off a lot of length but one cut was way better than the other, mine. She even said the very words "I like your hair cut better" to me. I kept trying to get her to go to St. Pete, but she never did.

Four months later we were finally being hit by the "economic downturn" and needed to let go of someone at work. After a few months of making suggestions to my boss on saving money and cutting hours instead of completely removing someone from the picture, I was called down to HR. I was and I wasn't surprised, as at the time if anyone should've been let go, it should've been the girl that sat in the corner and never talked to anyone or offered help when it was needed. But hey, if they dont see you they forget you exist right! I was laid off and my boss was more upset than I was. Why? Because I wasn't laid off due to my performance or the fact that I had seniority, because I wasn't the longest running assistant. I was laid off because of politics. The EA, didn't like the fact that I was the spitting image or her 10 years, 2 kids and a better hair cut ago. She convinced the person I assisted for two years to get rid of me. It didn't take much after that, as the people downstairs never ask questions.

Now if she would've just gotten to know me, the EA never would've had a thing to worry about. You see in my position, my boss would've had to move up to the EA's position for me to even be able to advance within the company. Not only that, but I have what I like to think of as much higher standards than the EA. Meaning I never would've gotten to where she was by doing the things she did and is currently still doing. I had no intentions of "running her out," and personally if I would've known ahead of time, I would've argued the point.

I'm not saying that I didn't enjoy my time away from the workforce or do not like the job I have now. I do wish I had a bit more to do here, as you can tell by this entry, I have quite a bit of time on my hands. However, I am saying that I was completely wronged in that situation and have every right to be upset by it. I sometimes wonder what I'd say if I ran into any of them in public, I also wonder why I shouldn't march in there and demand my job back knowing the things that I do. Mostly though, as in a lot of lifes situations, I wish I knew then what I know now, because I would've had all the power to fight them on it.

So that's that and this is what made it to the paper:
"I'm ticked off because I was laid off — not because of performance or seniority, but because the executive assistant was jealous that my haircut was better. Office politics are a slap in the face to those who actually abide by the rules!"

It's the PG version as I originally submitted the explanation of how she made her way to that position. At least people read it and hopefully, there are more eyes open to what actually goes on between the walls of an office. Without even knowing the facts, and just knowing it was wrong, I'd like to thank all of the people at the office who voiced their opinions on the decision. I'd also like to thank my ex boss who didn't leave me in the dark on what happened, although it didn't take much.

Oh week days, how I loathe thee.

The picture above expresses my emotions from 830 this morning until about 530 tonight.

On days like this, or weeks for that matter, all I can think of is how much more productive I could be at home. I like being employed and I like receiving a paycheck, but when I'm twiddling my thumbs and blogging on the clock, there are some issues at hand.  Has anyone else ever wondered why more companies don't move toward virtual employment. It would save so much more time, space, energy, the list goes on and on. Not only for the employee but the employer as well. Think of how much lower that energy bill would be. Or how about this, what if we worked in office 3 days a week and out of office 2 days a week. Your employees would be less likely to waste company time, property, or jump off a bridge for that matter. I'm fishing here, but really, think about how much sense it really makes.

Summer Friday Fun @ Work

Below is an email about a mock article I sent to a co-worker after he commented on shooting at turtles during his youth. This is the kind of stuff that makes my job fun...enjoy:

Suspect in Hunter’s Creek Turtle Slayings on the Loose
George P. Nonsense Staff Writer
11:17 AM EDT, June 12, 2009

In the small town of Hunter’s Creek, just outside of Orlando, there are questions without answers. Detectives are looking for a white male who is suspected in what appears to be a turtle massacre. Home owners are baffled as to why someone would be on the hunt for these harmless creatures, and want to know who is responsible for the empty shells popping up all over the community.

It appears that the alleged killer is shooting the turtles for amusement or just to see what bullets will do to them.

“What has a turtle ever done to anyone?” asks Jimmy Bowman, 19, of Hunter’s Creek. The suspect is described as 40-45 years old, has salt and peppered spiky hair with glasses and drives a red Toyota Tacoma. He has also been seen on a Harley Davidson motorcycle sporting saddlebags.

If you have seen this person or have any details leading to the capture of the suspected turtle killer, please call the local Hunter’s Creek police hotline by dialing 407-91-TURTLE.

That's quite a jump!

Florida dropped from number 26 to number 9 in states with the worst drivers, in the last YEAR! I think that should say enough about what we are dealing with out there. When I say we, I am speaking for all drivers in this state who actually obey traffic laws, yield when we are supposed to, don’t go out of our way to speed up when someone needs to cut in, or cut someone off for driving too slowly. What happened to common courtesy? Oh and by the way, for those who don’t know : When you are faced with a green light, need to turn, and there is on coming traffic, YOU DO NOT HAVE THE RIGHT OF WAY! This is happening a lot lately and is the newest in dumb driving.

Cell Phoes and Driving

It seems that no one can drive while talking on their cell phone, but everyone insists on doing it anyway. So I have come up with a solution. From this day forth let’s include it in the driving test. When it’s time to get behind the wheel, someone from the DMV will call you and talk to you during the entire duration of your road exam. And hopefully a few years from now the roads will be a little less dangerous as more and more drivers will know how to do two things at once without impending upon an attempted murder charge around every corner.

Today's Headlines

'Should Casey Anthony face death penalty? ' Yes, of course she should. It's hard to believe that there are people out there who would say no to that. Yeah, everyone deserves the right to a fair trial and by all means give her one, but definitely base it on the fact that if convicted, she gets the death penalty. It's only fair.

'Last of Nadya Suleman's octuplets leaves hospital.' Who gives a shit. She's just in it for the publicity and frankly I wish I could opt out of financially supporting her and the 14 kids that will never get as much parental attention as they deserve. Those kids should be placed in the homes and arms of people who will love, care and provide for them, not the media attention they attract.

'We think: Don't rob the future.' Precisely. Cutting back on school funding, firing teachers and even closing schools, is NOT the right way to handle the situation. The people in this state (and most of the country as well) are retarded. I blame the educational system. No one cares to educate anymore. The school boards seem to be run by a bunch of greedy good for nothings out to cut everything as long as it isn't their own pay. Basically politicians. I’d like to know who decided that providing a strong education for the next generation should be put on the back burner. At this rate, the country as a whole will rot even faster as a result of current practices and proposed implementations.

Something else to ponder on throughout your day: If we are only allowed to water on certain days of the week to save on water consumption, why aren't those philosophies the same for printing money? Why are we not conserving the value of the American dollar? We print and print and print till our hearts content, which by the way is never enough, and our monetary value is fading fast as a result. Printing trillions of dollars to bail out the economy is only contributing to the problem. Why do we need to save companies who weren’t smart enough to survive on their own? Why not let them fail and make room for the ones who were prepared? There are already a billion insurance companies, banks and retail chains out there. Personally, when this is all said and done, I'd rather be banking with a company that had no problem surviving the recession. Reason being: I know that if they can take care of themselves, without asking for handouts, the people running the show are doing a damn good job and my money is safe there.

On a totally unrelated note (that I thought you should also think about): It is my belief that the people out there creating computer viruses and worms are just as malicious as the ones who contract AIDS, find out about it, and decide to sleep with everyone they possibly can just out of spite.

Mic Check 1 2

If I started a podcast or even compiled a magazine/booklet of questions and possible answers/outcomes worthy of hearing by the ears of those who make all the decisions that have so far doomed this country, WOULD THEY LISTEN?

From the Weekly:

4:34 p.m.: The cops busted a man with crack.
And now, allow me to climb back atop my soapbox. Last week – the day after the Obama administration pledged money, technology and manpower to secure the border and help Mexico battle its drug cartels – Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said this: “I feel very strongly we have a co-responsibility. Our insatiable demand for illegal drugs fuels the drug trade,” she said.

“Insatiable.” America’s demand for drugs cannot be satiated. Forty years of a war on drugs hasn’t stopped people from consuming drugs, and no increase in anti-narcotics funding or DEA agents is going to change the human desire to get twisted now and again. So long as there’s a demand for something, there will be a supplier. Prohibition can’t stop demand, so prohibition will fail.

So yeah, there’s American culpability in the unrest that could topple the Mexican government. But it doesn’t lie with the pot-smoking frat boy, or even the crack-addled prostitute. It’s all about policy – and if Clinton and the rest of the Obama administration followed their own logic to its zenith, that reality would be staring them in the face.

You can’t stop the demand, but you can regulate supply (see alcohol). You can limit to whom it is sold, and in what quality and quantity. You can more effectively deal with addictions and obliterate the black market both here and in Mexico. But you can only do that if the products are legal.

The truth is that black markets cause many of the problems we associate with drugs. Its purveyors are, by definition, criminals who operate in a system without rules, which leads to chaos (see Wall Street). The prohibition of liquor gave us Al Capone, after all.

Taking drugs off the black market means they’ll be regulated and taxed, which would come in handy right about now, considering how this state and others are closing schools and laying off teachers to close giant deficits. The state would license dealers, who would have to conform to government regulations lest their licenses (and livelihoods) be revoked. Sales to minors would be prohibited, as they are with alcohol and cigarettes now. We could focus our money and energy on treating addicts, rather than busting two-bit stoners with a hookah in their living rooms. The black market would fold like a Murphy bed.

Is legalization a panacea? Of course not. There would still be overdoses and traffic accidents and enough drug-related horror stories to fill your evening newscasts. There would, especially with marijuana, be people who simply grew their own, thus depriving the state of any additional tax revenue. Some people would get hooked that otherwise wouldn’t. And the notion of readily available, store-bought heroin is more than a little disconcerting.

So maybe there shouldn’t be a blanket legalization of all drugs. I don’t presume to know which drugs should be decriminalized and which shouldn’t. But when it’s abundantly clear that the war on drugs is a failure of epic proportions, maybe it’s time to at least start rethinking our approach, before we dump billions more dollars into a war we’re losing. You know: “When you find yourself in a hole, stop digging.” Our demand is, as Clinton described it, “insatiable.”

Unfortunately, that’s not the direction we’re headed. At a recent online town hall, President Obama simply laughed off a question about legalizing pot, as if the subject weren’t even worthy of discussion.

All I have to say is : Right on!
To whom do I pass this on to so that it's read by the right persons? How do you get this message into Washington? With all the people "running things", with all the hands in the pot (no pun intended), how is there not someone who can come up with this theory on their own? Why are all the thinkers working outside of the white house/rule making bubble?

Idling Forever...

To Orange County Traffic Engineering and the personnel responsible for the signal at the intersection of S. OBT and Consulate Dr:

Since you’ve opened up two highway exits into the already claustrophobic traffic, containing all the area’s “nine to fivers” and the jerk offs at MMI, could you at least make the light a little longer. Six cars at a time is a little ridiculous!

Can we get any dumber?

A woman called Kissimmee police to say she was locked inside her car at the Walgreen's on John Young Parkway near Poinciana.

"My car will not start. I'm locked inside my car," the unidentified woman said."Nothing electrical works. And it's getting very hot in here, and I'm not feeling well."

The dispatcher asked the woman if she was able to manually pull the lock up on the door. The woman said she would try, and then, she said, "Yes, I got the door open."

This is from today's Orlando Sentinel...and they want to cut even more of the educational budget!

Today's Ticked...A Bushel of Fun

“We need to teach our women today that the back-talking they do to men is wrong.”
Sure! Let’s just go back 100 years or so and erase the whole Women’s Rights thing. Let’s just scratch that right on out of existence. Then we’ll move to improve business for Scotch and buy every woman a roll of tape so that she can just keep her mouth shut! That way there’s no question about whether or not what she says is pleasing to your ears. - You’ve got to be kidding me.

“When did it become OK to go out in your pajamas? It's bad enough they started pajama pants. Now they're wearing pajama tops and even wearing fuzzy slippers to go shopping.”
It never became OK to go out in your pajamas. Everyone just became too lazy to actually get dressed.

“In response to women buying bras that fit properly: This was called in by a man or a flat-chested broad. I'm an extremely big-busted woman; not fat. Bras are designed by men who don't know how to fit women. The cost of a bra for someone my size starts at $40.”
First off I don’t think you can really “call in” to ticked off. Secondly, it doesn’t matter who complained about the bra fat. Truth is not ALL bras are designed by men and I’m SURE you can find one for less than $40. So in conclusion: Get smarter and look harder.

“Our education system doesn't teach our children how to buy a car or home.”
It’s bad enough that we’ve pushed the educational system to teach our children about sex (they obviously aren’t doing a good job) but now you want them to also teach our kids how to buy a house and car? Let me guess, it would be great if the system could start teaching them how to dress and feed themselves too? What exactly do you consider your roll as a parent to be?

Not to mention helping the unemployment rate by doing so.

Yet Another One

FORT PIERCE, Fla. (March 3) - Authorities say a Florida woman called 911 three times after McDonald's employees told her they were out of McNuggets.

When are they going to start handing out serious fines for this? How dumb can Florida get? It's like every couple of weeks someone calls 911 because the fast food chain they happened to stop at didn't have what they wanted.

I bet if you just drove another block to a different location (of the same chain restaurant) they would've had your nuggets or your lemonade.

SHOCKER I KNOW.

Economics

Hey Media, how about we STOP reporting on how bad the economy is.
Just for one week.

Then see how scared people are about spending money.

What is wrong with you people?

http://www.cnn.com/2009/US/02/26/hate.groups.report/index.html

First off I would like to say that your ancestors were the ones that brought them in so if you're going to be mad at anyone, be mad at the ones who taught you to hate. With that said, let's begin.

My first question in reading this article is why was a former klansman (not giving them the privilege of a capital letter) elected into office? I think there should be some sort of rules against that. Someone with a background like that is definitely not looking out for the good of all. But then again what politician really is. Secondly, what exactly is the problem with a black man becoming president? And before I answer that question with another question, let me just remind everyone that he is only HALF black. There, now we can all get over the idea of a black man becoming president. He's a man just like anyone else no matter the color of his skin. And I blame the media (another blog for another day) on all the hype about his skin color. If you didn't repeat it so often and throw it into people's faces, it would be such a big deal and the haters would have a harder time using it as a ploy to draw more in.

Back to that next question, are you angry with the power he holds because it really goes to show that black people have rights too? Are you scared that if we follow a black leader, then you'll wake up one morning to all blacks putting you and yours in chains and making you their slaves? Well fortunately for you and everyone else in this country, those days have passed so you have nothing to worry about there, rest easy Billy Joe.

I am amazed at the amount of hatred still left in this country, and I am proud to be a product of non-hatred as well. It's called unconditional love. Being a person of mixed decent, I would be proud and honored to be your neighbor. Just to throw it in your face that there are more people out there that love change and love the differences in each other, and your "hate everyone of a different race than mine" clans can all go to hell. I like how your followers state that the president helps provide a visual aid in providing a sense of purpose. What a joke. There is no purpose. And if fear in the White European-American heritage dying out is what's keeping you going, then I hope you love your sister and mother enough to do the nasty cause that's the only way "your kind" is going to survive. White American heritage will live on with or without you and your hatred and I think time is proving that the you'll will be at a loss in the end.

I'm going to have to end this by commending the writer of the column for ending it with that final comment that sums this issue up oh so well:

"Their thinking is very distorted."

You are a disturbed bunch and I hope you find the psychological help you need to get over this soon, because whether you like it or not, the world is moving on without you. Not to mention melding together! Ha, take that!
